Bill Sanderson Speaks on The Future of Philanthropy

November 18, 2020

This week, GSF Corporate Executive Vice President and Chief Administrative Officer Bill Sanderson shared thought leadership during a virtual speaker series presented by OC Forum, the premier nonpartisan current affairs organization convening the Orange County community in an interactive environment, to foster relationships, exchange ideas and discuss public policy issues with knowledgeable, distinguished speakers and leaders. The event, The Future of Philanthropy: Nonprofits and Businesses Leading with Purpose and Impact.

“We have always been a values-based business [with] a credo based on the success of others,” said Bill during the speaking engagement. “Our ethos seems to be that of our community, and that people are realizing—our customers and employees—that it’s not so important what you do, but why you do it.”

Bill discussed the impact of the ongoing COVID-19 crisis and how it has called philanthropy into action in ways never seen before. Sharing an example from GSF’s pandemic response, he spoke about the KanPak U.S. surplus bottled milk donations and showed a bottle of the shelf-stable milk as a visual aid during the video presentation. Additionally, he commented about GSF’s corporate social responsibility and culture as key motivators among associates seeking career opportunities to not just do well, but also to do good in the communities where they work and live.

“The [GSF] Foundation—as we do an employee survey every 18 months—continues to rise in importance  to our employee population,” Bill said. “People love Golden State Foods because not only do we make great products and provide great service to preeminent foodservice providers around the world, but they really love Golden State Foods because of our Foundation because they can feel good and experience the great pleasure of philanthropy, whether it be time, talent [or] treasure in helping those less fortunate.”

Additional event speakers and moderators included leaders from Bank of America, University of California, Irvine, Second Harvest Food Bank of Orange County, OC Grantmakers, and Advanced Beauty Colleges. To view a recorded video of the entire event, visit this link. Bill’s segment begins at the 36:00 time mark.
