In its third consecutive year of earning workforce safety recognition, GSF’s Opelika, Alabama Protein Products manufacturing facility has reached the top level of achievement with the 2021 Safety Award of Honor from the North American Meat Institute (NAMI). During this week’s NAMI Environment, Labor and Safety Conference, Opelika received the award as one of the 58 leading plants to maintain the industry’s highest standards of workforce safety.
“This outstanding recognition of the Opelika team has resulted from the day-to-day continuous improvement focus that we place on associates’ safety, with the corporate support level and the local facility leadership successfully working together,” said Wayne Morgan, GSF Corporate Vice President and President, Protein Products and Operations Support Services. “This continuous improvement mindset with safety has consistently come through in our internal safety numbers and also in NAMI’s recognition of GSF Opelika as an industry leader for the past three years in a row.”
NAMI previously recognized GSF with the 2020 Safety Award of Commendation and the 2019 Safety Certificate of Recognition. To determine which of its four recognition levels a meat production facility achieves, NAMI’s evaluation criteria include: beating the national industry standard for occupational injuries/illnesses, a safety and health program questionnaire, and an OSHA calculation of DART (Days Away, Restricted or Transferred) rates. For 2021, NAMI honored 131 companies across its four recognition levels.
